Supporting Families Through Infant Loss

This library guide is a companion guide to the AHEC conference that will address the important topic of infant loss after 20 weeks of gestation. We will approach this issue with a focus on racial and ethnic health disparities and will cover strategies of

Panel (Lived Experiences): Moderator Rachel Urrutia, MD, MSCR & Facilitator Leila Lewis (10:00 AM)

Personal experiences of infant loss will be discussed during the panel. The moderator will be Dr. Rachel Urrutia and the facilitator will be Leila Lewis.

 

Dr. Urrutia is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Preventive Medicine. She is an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology where she provides clinical care for general obstetrics and gynecology patients, including those who have experienced or are experiencing loss. Her research is focused on alleviating disparities and inequities in reproductive health and improving access to preventive services for all people. Whenever possible, Dr. Urrutia aims to be meaningfully engaged with community members that are impacted by her research and work. As the Women's Health Medical Consultant at DHHS, she interacts with reproductive health providers and clinical staff around the state of North Carolina as well as with payers and policy makers.

Leila D. Lewis has led a career as an administrator in public service with nearly 20 years of program development experience concentrated in the areas of volunteer management and community engagement. She received a BFA in dance from Temple University and a MFA in Dance from Hollins University in collaboration with the American Dance Festival, The Forsythe Company and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt, Germany.

Leila’s birth-work journey began more than 15 years ago and is firmly rooted in a reproductive justice framework. She serves her community as a community-based doula, a La Leche League Leader, a Certified RETAIN Parental Leave Coach and a Family Wholeness Advocate. Leila’s work and partnerships serve the sole purpose of ensuring all families are empowered by their natural right to make educated decisions for themselves and their families.
