At the end of this independent learning module, participants will:
Understand why it is important to critically appraise the literature.
Understand basic study designs and the pros and cons of each.
Understand that the goals of critical appraisal are assessing bias, chance, and confounding.
Have a basic idea of how to approach an article in order to appraise it; focusing on the methods section and some portions of the introduction and results.
Know how to find and why to use available checklists for appraising articles.
Practice critically appraising an article using a checklist from the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). Select the checklist that matches the article study design/question type and then follow the instructions to critically appraise that article.
